In the spirit of celebrating Earth Day 2012, Big Island Weekly presents our first Online Photo Contest -
- What do you do to care for our Island?
Founded in 1970 as a day of education about environmental issues, Earth Day is now a globally celebrated holiday that inspires awareness and appreciation for the Earth's natural environment.
How do you care for this beautiful Island that we call home?
From organic gardening to green building and recycling projects, there are many ways to care for the earth. Our contest will give you the opportunity to teach and learn more by sharing your own "green" ideas and activities.
Submit a photo and description to show us how you care for our Island. The submission with the most votes will receive our grand prize!
: A choice of stays at the beautiful Hawaii Island Retreat at Ahu Pohaku Ho'omaluhia. The eco-boutique hotel and spa has an earth-friendly design and green-living features which are the perfect example of our contest goal - how to live both in luxury and in balance with the land. The prize includes dinner for two at Sushi Rock in Hawi!
: A gift set from Kona Boys containing gear and merchandise valued over $200 and a $50 gift certificate to Eddie Aikau Restaurant & Surf Museum.
Here are the basic entry guidelines:
• Contest submissions will begin April 1, 2012 and end April 18, 2012 at midnight (12 am HST). All entries will be submitted for judging by our sponsors and 5 will be selected for the final round of voting by the public. Voting will take place from Sunday, April 22 thru Saturday, April 28 midnight (12 am HST). The votes will be tallied and the winner contacted by May 1 2012.
• Each entry must be an original photograph (by the entrant), which shows the action or direct result of the action, taking place on the Isle of Hawaii (Big Island).
• The title and description of the action must contain no more than 75 words.
• The location must be verifiable by address and zip code.
• You must successfully upload the photograph to the "Malama 'Aina" contest on www.bigislandweekly.com by midnight (12 am HST) on Wednesday, April 18,2012.
• The submission must not be defamatory, offensive or obscene nor violate or infringe on any trademark, copyright, publicity, privacy or other rights of any third party.
• No entries from professional services or businesses associated with sustainable living or "green" practices or products affiliated with said businesses will be allowed to compete.
• The winners will be featured on www.bigislandweekly.com and in our Big Island Weekly print publication and must be willing to submit to photographs for both. Any participating sponsors may subsequently use the winning image in conjunction with announcements for the purposes of this contest.
Big Island Weekly is encouraging all members of our ohana to get involved by making simple changes to their lifestyle which will help our 'Aina to thrive. We believe a Natural, Sustainable, Healthy relationship with our environment is everyone's responsibility.
