In celebration of our island’s diversity and in honor of St. Patrick’s Day we are having our first ever Limerick writing contest! Pono Limericks! All ye who would be poets please feel free to enter and compete for our Grand Prize.
Here are a few basic guidelines for entry:
A Limerick is a kind of witty, humorous or nonsense poem of five lines, in which the first, second, and fifth lines rhyme with each other, and the third and fourth lines, which are shorter, form a rhymed couplet.
The rhyme scheme is AABBA
Here’s an example:
A young man loved surfing at Pines
So much he missed out on school time
He showed up for a test
And when questioned at best
He could only answer “Da Kine”
A - A young man loved surfing at Pines

B - He showed up for a test
B - And when questioned at best
A - He could only answer “Da Kine”

Limerick Writing Tips
It's actually a tad more complex than many poem structures.
Here are the basics:
1. It's a 5-line poem.
2. Establish a rhythm first. Rhyme structure is AABBA
3. Lines 1,2 and 5 rhyme and share rhythm, and generally have seven to ten syllables. The "beat" is di di dum di di dum di di dum.
4. Lines 3 and 4 share rhyme and rhythm patterns. They usually have only five to seven syllables. Their beat is di di dum di di di dum...
5. Ideally, it should be about a humorous or clever story/observation/statement. Think of limerick structure like a joke.
6. Establish a main character and put them in a situation.
7. Let the situation get out of control resulting in some problem
8. Resolve the situation with the last line carrying the real "punch line" that makes it truly funny.
Remember to keep it “Pono!” No dirties will be allowed into the contest!
The winner will be featured on westhawaiitoday.com and in our West Hawaii Today daily print publication and must be willing to submit to photographs for both. Any participating sponsors may subsequently use the winning Limerick in conjunction with announcements for the purposes of this contest.
