EARTH AND OCEAN FESTIVAL/FREE CONCERT - KEAUHOU, KONA

The Earth & Ocean Festival at Keauhou is designed to showcase and emphasize the unique treasures of Hawai'i Island through active participation in educational booths and activities on coral reef, ocean stewardship and conservation practices in Hawaii. Traditional Hawaiian cultural practices will be shared, and environmental presentations will be viewed in the Reef & Sustainable Island Theater. Enjoy locally made and sourced food including award winning Chef Paul Heerlein and students from the University of Hawaii Food Service Program. Musical entertainment by Darlene Ahuna. Ride your bike to the event! Special parking for bikes! Time: 10am to 4pm at Keauhou Beach Resort's Lu'au Grounds. Free to the public.

GRAND GREEN HOMES TOUR - KONA/KOHALA

Get the latest on earth-friendly building technology, landscaping and decorating at the second annual Grand Green Homes Tour on Sunday, April 22. Presented by the Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce (KKCC) and West Hawaii Mediation Center (WHMC) and sponsored by the County of Hawaii Department of Research and Development, the event offers residents and visitors the opportunity to visit "green" homes on Earth Day, 2012. Attendees have their choice of touring up to eight homes in the Kona-Kohala districts from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. All homes exemplify various green home strategies and tour attendees can get info on where to source products and services. Pre-sale tickets go on sale March 26 and are priced at $35 to tour up to four homes, or $10 per home the day of the tour. Tickets will be available at the KKCC office in Kailua-Kona and WHMC in Waimea. PLANTS OF HULA: "NA MEA KANU O KE HULA" - HAWAI'I VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK

From 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., join Kumu hula Ab Kawainohoikala'i Valencia and botanist Tim Tunison as they team up for a cultural and scientific exploration of the plants used in hula. Learn about "kino lau" (manifestations of Hawaiian deities in plant form) as well as the significance of plants used for the hula altar and for adornments. Cultural protocols used when picking plants will be discussed and participants will walk among native species in their natural environment. The day ends with a hands-on lesson in native plant propagation and plant seedlings to take home. Cost per person is $60 for Friends of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park members and $85 for non-members. Students (K-12 and college with valid student ID) are half-price.
